Do not bypass garage door safety sensors
If a garage door will not close, disabling its safety beams is not a repair. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear of the opening, stop using an unreliable door, and arrange a diagnosis. Never tape the sensors together, bridge their wiring, or move them out of the doorway to defeat their purpose.
This page replaces our earlier bypass guidance. That advice was inappropriate for a safety device and should not be followed.
What you can check without disabling protection
- Look for an object blocking the beam near the bottom of the doorway. Only remove an obstruction when the door is stationary and you can stay clear of its travel.
- Check the sensor indicator lights and note whether they are steady, off or flickering. The meaning depends on the opener model; use its manual rather than assuming all brands use the same colors.
- Look for visible dirt on the lenses or a bumped bracket. Do not loosen wiring or electrical connections to experiment.
- Record the opener's model number and any flashing-light or display code. Share these details when requesting service.

When to stop troubleshooting
A crooked door, loose cable, damaged track, or suspected broken spring needs a professional assessment. Do not force the door, repeatedly run the motor, or pull an emergency release on an open or damaged door: it could fall. Sensor trouble and a mechanical fault can occur at the same time.
Repair the cause and verify safe operation
A service visit should identify whether the problem is obstruction, alignment, wiring, an incompatible replacement part, the opener, or the door itself. Ask the technician to explain the repair and demonstrate the manufacturer's safety checks before normal use resumes.
